The nation’s Latina/o population has now reached over 50 million; or 15% of the estimated total U.S. population of 300 million; and a growing portion of the world’s population now lives and works in cities that are increasingly diverse. Latino Urbanism provides the first national perspective on Latina/o urban policy; addressing a wide range of planning policy issues that impact both Latinas/os in the US; as well as the nation as a whole; tracing how cities develop; function; and are affected by socio-economic change.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. well-kept secretBy TerridProfessor Gates has exposed a well-kept secret by investigating the African heritage prevalent in Latin and South America; including Brazil; Mexico; Peru; the Dominican Republic; Haiti and Cuba. For those of us who are researching our family backgrounds; this book brings validation as well as an introduction to the history and cultures of these countries. My mestizo ancestry (African; Yaqui; Sephardic) lies mostly in Mexico; so of course I would have liked more coverage of that country in his book; but Professor Gates had a lot to cover in a short period of time. His book is a companion piece to his PBS programs on the same subject. As slavery and its aftermath in Latin and South America is a relatively new subject to most people; Professor Gates peels back the layers; showing his own discovery and tendency to compare these countries to ours. One difference; of course; is there was much more mingling of the races below our southern border; which shows in the vestiges of the people and in their customs. Hopefully; his book will open the door to more studies of this very intriguing subject.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Race issue in the AmericaBy MeirThe books is a companion of six hours documentary; which; the Cuba Revolution did not resolve the race question; where in the end a white economy in new pesos and the Cuba Africans in the old peso; where societies; in Republic Dominique; Brazil; being African needed many colors or color; so can be not Africans; and others just forgotten; the US had 500;000 slaves; but between Portugal and Spain 11 Million and few surviving; forgetting. He did not cover Colombia; where discrimination; and African decent concentrated in Choco; on the other hand because 40 years civil conflict fuel by inequality; will be a dangerous place to report from. SHEDS SO MUCH LIGHT ON GLOBAL WHITE SUPREMACY; A FANTASTIC TEXTBOOK!By alltatupThis is a fantastic book which I use to teach a university-level course on Latin American culture and history. Gates is such a great writer and this book; along with the film series; really gets students thinking about comparisons and contrasts with the United States' own history of slavery and its Black population. My students appreciate seeing how white supremacist ideology functions within a broader; global context: this gives them a clearer sense of what really goes on with regard to race relations in the USA and why.
