Bible and Sword: England and Palestine from the Bronze Age to Balfour

PDF Bible and Sword: England and Palestine from the Bronze Age to Balfour by Barbara W. Tuchman in History

Description

Born into the Zaghawa tribe in the Sudanese desert; Halima Bashir received a good education away from her rural surroundings (thanks to her doting; politically astute father) and at twenty-four became her village’s first formal doctor. Yet not even Bashir’s degree could protect her from the encroaching conflict that would consume her homeland. Janjaweed Arab militias savagely assaulted the Zaghawa; often with the backing of the Sudanese military. Then; in early 2004; the Janjaweed attacked Bashir’s village and surrounding areas; raping forty-two schoolgirls and their teachers. Bashir; who treated the traumatized victims; some as young as eight years old; could no longer remain quiet. But breaking her silence ignited a horrifying turn of events.Raw and riveting; Tears of the Desert is the first memoir ever written by a woman caught up in the war in Darfur. It is a survivor’s tale of a conflicted country; a resilient people; and an uncompromising spirit.

Review
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. the English need for Palestine.By artistl am a history buff and reading this history was very illuminating. I had no idea that from Cromwell's time forward so many Englishman were both enchanted and involved in Palestine and the Levant. Some were interested in getting a home for the Jewish people because they felt that had to be what was in the area in order for the second coming of Christ. They also wanted England to be in control of the area from the very beginning. They did not plan for it to become and independent state of Israel. Once they controlled Suez they felt they had to have people in the land and they might as well be some Jewish settlers. It was so interesting when the wealthy Jewish Englishman were not interested for themselves ; nor were the same type of people from Germany ; but the poor and desperate Jews from Poland and Russia wanted that homeland and the Germans and English did not want them in their countries. The whole history from the Norman invasion of Britian to Henry the VIII's seperation from the the Pope and the Catholic Church were well recorded. A long but great read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. More than one can assimilate easily. Great background for the current imbroglio in that part of the world. Quality of the paperback was ok; clearly not new.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
