During the nineteenth century; European women of all countries and social classes experienced dramatic and enduring changes in their familial; working and political lives. However; the history of women at this time is not one of unmitigated progress - theirs was an uphill struggle; fraught with hindrances; hard work and economic downturns; and the increasing intrusion of the public into their innermost private and personal lives.Breaking away from traditional categories; Rachel G. Fuchs and Victoria E. Thompson provide a sense of the variety and complexity of women's lives across national and regional boundaries; juxtaposing the experiences of women with the perceptions of their lives. Three themes unite this study:- the tension between tradition and modernity- the changing relationship between the community and individual- the shifting boundaries between public and privateDealing with individual women's lives within a large social and cultural context; Fuchs and Thompson demonstrate how strong and courageous women refused to live within the prescribed domestic roles - and how many became the modern women of the twentieth century.

Oustanding take on a painful experienceBy Brittany RobbThere is so much more to this investigation than any film could portray; which is why this book is an important read. Many felt impacted by the Spotlight team's reporting; whether or not they had been directly connected. Religion; Catholic Christianity in this case; permeates the lives of those who believe in ways that can't be untangled easily. Thank you for this book and for your continued dedication to the journalism craft.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Important BookBy CustomerThis book is at times very hard to read because of it's disturbing subject matter of pedophilia. It is especially disturbing because this abuse has taken place in churches by so-called middle of God who are supposed to be protectors of the innocent. It is a cautionary tale of what happens when power goes unchecked. I encourage everyone; especially parents; to have the courage to read this book and then to have conversations about what change might look like. Incredibly well-written; incredibly hard to stomach.5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. DisturbingBy Mary SThe movie; Spotlight; chronicled the Boston Globe's expose of the Roman Catholic Church's determination to keep this scandal under wraps. This book details the depth of the abuse that priests inflicted on its victims. How the priests succeeded in abusing their victims--some for years--can only be understood if the reader comprehends that to a Catholic a priest was God's emissary on earth. If you defied a priest; you defied God. The book also documents how little attention the Church paid to the victims even after the extent of the abuse was known. They became "cases" to be settled and hidden from the public.
