Battle of Gettysburg: A Turning Point in the WarBy Faith Elizabeth CummingsOnce again; we have a brief; but comprehensive picture of one of the most important battles of the Civil War. Not only do we read a full account of the battle itself; in this brief history; but we also get a concise and accurate picture of what happened in the days and even months before the battle. this is important because it explains why the battle happened as it did; and perhaps why it was so devastating. This is another well-written part of the Hourly History series and I hope it will lead many readers to do further study of this subject. I would point out; however; so that maybe some editing can be done; that there are several typographical errors in this book. While they are small; they do sometimes detract from the excellent writing and research that went into this small book. Thank you for another informative read!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Can't speed read? Not about to pick up a ...By Phyllis HelfrichCan't speed read? Not about to pick up a scholarly tome with hundreds of pages and another hundred pages of footnotes and references? Need a quick memory jogger for a subject you once found fascinating? Then the Hourly Book about the Battle of Gettysburg is for you ! The three day momentous battle gets a surprising amount of detail. The preliminary account of forces moving into place gives due notice of the terrain; location and the principal leading personalities. Though difficult for each armed force to keep track of the other; I did find it a first for me to learn that the Union forces used hot air balloons for reconnaissance purposes. I don't recall pictures or mention of them in any other work. Further in the battle's recounting I can understand the author's desire to avoid confusion about two similar sounding names and locations i.e. Cemetery Hill and Seminary Ridge. The author chose only to make reference to Cemetery Hill. I have read numerous books on the Gettysburg Battle and Civil War. I have lived in Gettysburg four years as a student at Gettysburg College. This book was a welcome; quick and informative review of the subject. . I welcomed the opportunity to reacquaint myself with a vital portion of our American heritage. It gives the highlights and reasonings for some of the decisions made. We have visited Gettysburg several times and it was so eerie to see the places where the battles that preserved the union took place! Great read!
