Outstanding essays on the various aspects of the Antietam Campaign of 1862By Joe Owen"Antietam: The Maryland Campaign of 1862: Volume 5; No. 3" Edited by Mark A. Snell (Savas Publishing Company; 1997; 183). This book is comprised of short but OUTSTANDING essays written by various historians and authors of the Antietam Campaign of 1862. The essays and authors are:- Who Lost the Lost Orders? Stonewall Jackson; His Courier; and Special Orders No. 191 by Wilber D. Jones; Jr.- "My God! Be Careful!" Morning Battle at Fox's Gap; September 14; 1862 by D. Scott Hartwig.- A Brigade Commander's First Fight: The Letters of Colonel Walter Phelps; Jr. During the Maryland Campaign. Edited by Tom Clemens.- The 1st Texas Volunteer Infantry in the Maryland Campaign by George E. Otott.- A Dear Bought Name: The 7th West Virginia Infantry's Assault on Bloody Lane by David W. Mellott.I initially bought this book to read about the First Texas Infantry in the battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg). Let me say that George Otott's short essay on the actions and heroism not only of the First Texas Infantry but the other regiments of Hood's Brigade during the battle is vividly and accurately described and one of the finest articles I have read about Hood's Brigade. Mr. Otott weaves in personal narratives with the regimental actions in a vivid; fascinating and descriptive read. The actions of the morning of September 17; 1862 of Hood's Brigade was at times confusing when they first entered the battle near Dunkard's Church; the woods surrounding the church; and the cornfield where the First Texas Infantry in a matter of an hour suffered 82.3% casualty rate. The descriptions of the battle by many of the participants of Hood's Brigade is written in the article and new information concerning the First Infantry Regiments valiant charge and stand makes this a first rate and valuable reference for not only readers but researchers and authors. One of the finest short histories of Hood's Brigade that I have read. I am researching Hood's Brigade at the battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) and the reminiscences of the soldiers and I will most assuredly use George Otott's essay as a guide and reference for the future work I will write. The other essay's by the authors are also excellent and cover a wide aspect of the Antietam Campaign. From who lost the Orders of Robert E. Lee that was found by Union Soldiers (I wont give the name but will say it was probably a soldier of Stonewall Jackson's staff). The small battles before the battle of Antietam; the personal and well written personal letters of Colonel Walter Phelps; Jr. The heroic 7th West Virginia and their assault on the Bloody Lane on September 17; 1862.This is the first book that I have purchased on the Civil War Regiments by Ted Savas and after reading this excellent book I plan on purchasing the rest of the series and sincerely hope that Savas Publishing will publish more of these series in the future! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
