Authoritative Examination of Anti-Access/Area Denial ConceptsBy Retired ReaderThis book is a through and informed discussion of the 21st Century concept of Anti-access Warfare; at least as held by the U.S. Navy USN). It’s author is a former career naval officer and clearly is a close student naval history and strategy. It provides an excellent definition of the concepts of anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) and counter anti-access operations. Tangredi also provides an excellent discussion of the concept of AirSea Battle; which was considered an exciting new concept in 2013 when this book was published. In the best tradition of such legendary naval strategists as Admiral Alfred T. Mahan; Tangredi uses historical examples to illustrate both successful and unsuccessful anti-access and counter anti-access operations. He also provides rather thought provoking scenarios of anti-access or counter anti-access operations that the USN may be required to execute in the future against such potential threats as China; Iran; North Korea; and Russia/Central Eurasia. All in all a very good book. The book loses one star because; through no fault of the author; it was overtaken by events when the USN bowed to political pressure and dropped the AirSea Battle concept for a more inclusive “Joint Concept for Access and Maneuver in the Global Commons” in January 2015. Incidentally although the USN seemed to believe that AirSea Battle concept was new it actually was first developed and used extensively by the USN and Imperial Japanese Navy during the Solomon Islands Campaign during 1942-1943.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. SuperbBy Augusta AriesThe most thorough review of the topic available. Well worth the read. It will be a reference; not just a book you read.5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. ExcellentBy SmcfarlandThis book is clear; concise; and informative. Tangredi is not afraid to say what needs to be said; and gives no heed to political opinions of the day. I highly recommend this book.
