Angles of Attack: An A-6 Intruder Pilot's War

PDF Angles of Attack: An A-6 Intruder Pilot's War by Peter Hunt in History

Description

During World War II; unprecedented employment avenues opened up for women and minorities in U.S. defense industries at the same time that massive population shifts and the war challenged Americans to rethink notions of race. At this extraordinary historical moment; Mexican American women found new means to exercise control over their lives in the home; workplace; and nation. In From Coveralls to Zoot Suits; Elizabeth R. Escobedo explores how; as war workers and volunteers; dance hostesses and zoot suiters; respectable young ladies and rebellious daughters; these young women used wartime conditions to serve the United States in its time of need and to pursue their own desires. But even after the war; as Escobedo shows; Mexican American women had to continue challenging workplace inequities and confronting family and communal resistance to their broadening public presence. Highlighting seldom heard voices of the "Greatest Generation;" Escobedo examines these contradictions within Mexican families and their communities; exploring the impact of youth culture; outside employment; and family relations on the lives of women whose home-front experiences and everyday life choices would fundamentally alter the history of a generation.

Air warfare but with impact and that's just in getting back to the boat and landing. Loved the character development. The world of carrier aviation. I was an Flight Deck Electrician (EM1) and would marvel at the efficiency of the pilots. A great read about a forgotten war.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cracking Good Story!By Jeff O'ByrneCracking good story! Unique in two ways: first; this is the only pilot story that I've read in which the author was in his terminal grade. The perspective is that of an experienced junior officer. Much context is unquestioned as 'above my paygrade'. This is right and proper and distinctive from Gillcrist; Olds et al who's long careers after active combat flying produced a different perspective. The second unique feature in this book is the detailed discussion of the tightly integrated A-6 flight crew. The relationship between the pilot and the bombardier/navigator differed from other multi-place aircraft. In this flight crew for example; the B/N is senior to the pilot and qualified to lead wing level strikes. The author and pilot is a grade junior and during certain phases of the mission the control of the flight is in the hands of the B//N. How this works out is an interesting example of leadership and control under the pressure of combat.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You Are There!By GeorgeThis book gets to the heart of Naval Aviation. This is real life on a carrier; the tragic lows to the very high highs. Hunt tells it like it is aboard a CV during not only combat ops but "routine" cyclic ops. He takes the reader into squadron life and into the cockpit. This book is the best description of the marriage between the Pilot and B/N and the coordination of cockpit duties I have ever read. As one with over 20 years in Naval Aviation; this book also explains why we need not only aircraft carriers but also a dedicated carrier based all weather medium bomber. Angles of Attack is a MUST READ for those looking for a real world insight to carrier aviation.
