At Oral Roberts University; I teach Jewish Christian Studies and selected this book as a textbook for my students. They had assigned readings from the book; but after they finished the book; we discussed what books they would have liked. They prefered that I select another book with pictures and history combined. So I showed them copies of other books; and they preferred one that was written in Israel by a woman who was also a tour guide and had done her homework by using major living archaelogists and scholars. The first choice was Daily Life at the Time of Jesus by Miriam Feinberg Vamosh Edition: Paperback Price: $16.99.The second runner up was by Matthews; whic was his latest edition of Customs and Manners. It had more text; but less pictures. And the first choice was not only well researched text; but amazing pictures! Will I use this book again for a class? Doubtful when so many new books are coming out that have updated inforamtion. But it's a good book to have in your library....kinda like a good Bible dictionary or encyclopedia. Can never have enough of them.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Still a ClassicBy SteveThere's a reason that this classic is still in print: it is a well-ordered; very informative summary of everything Israelite. One could read a biblical dictionary; however; the dictionary divides its material alphabetically. That's a bit arbitrary for topics that span a thousand years and documents with a varied history. DeVaux's division of the material offers an encyclopedic scope within manageable topics.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ancient Israel: Its Life and Instructions (Biblical Resource)By Frank DonahueThis book is a cultural and sociological study of the people and traditions of Ancient Israel. A very competent text book; and well worth your time.Sincerely; Frank Donahue
