Interesting insights into Egyptian cultureBy Valerie CaraottaThe study of Egyptology in this book covers the region of the Nile Delta from the fifth century BC to the seventh century A.D. It was in the 13th century A.D. That author Van Basten indicates the first writings about ancient Egyptian history were written by the Europeans. In the 17th century A.D. he says the study would become more professional and rigorous with pyramid measurements resulting in an illustrated book. Also indicated was that when the British defeated the French and took possession of Egypt they also took possession of the Rosetta Stone which deciphered the hieroglyphic language. It wouldn't be until 1822 when famous monuments were discovered and documented in great detail. When Napoleon conquered Egypt in 1798; he shares; a group of scholars accompanied him; documenting and exploring Egypt history. In this book you will learn of the individuals who helped with the study of Egypt as an academic discipline as well as learn about discoveries that have changed our understanding of these people. Interesting to learn was that as wealthy explorers travel to Egypt vast amounts of antiquities were taken back to places in Europe and sold on the black market. Many may have learned through other history lessons that Egypt had a sophisticated culture surrounding death and life after death. "One of the first orders of business for a newly crowned king was to begin to plan and execute his burial chamber… They believe that the dead needed to be buried with all they would need in the afterlife; which was much the same as what we need in this life: food; drink; clothing; a few little luxuries to make your stay in the afterlife a little nicer. "This book will wet your appetite with facts and historical markers perhaps giving you; like me; the desire to do further study. Though this is not a Linklea book it does have informative insights well worth exploring. T.D.Van Basten is a history lover and begin traveling after college to Egypt and Spain. He possesses a unique collection of artifacts.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One StarBy cassyeThe information was not al accurate.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
