Speaking of AbeBy Christian SchlectThose who collect books about President Lincoln will want to add this one; solidly edited by Professor Burlingame; to the mix.Short; random recollections of the great man from assorted people who knew him well are the core here. They were gathered up originally by one of the president's closest White House secretaries. This is by no means a substitute for a biography. Abraham Lincoln is the subject of more than a barrelful of these; but one can go much worse than reading Professor Burlingame's own two-volume scholarly story.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Firsthand memories of LincolnBy Richard Lawrence Miller; Lincoln authorAn invaluable collection of recollections by persons who knew Lincoln before and during the presidency. The stories were recorded in interviews conducted by John Nicolay; one of Lincoln's White House secretaries. This book will probably be enjoyed more by specialists than by general readers. Five-star rating is based on book's usefulness to researchers.
