An Introduction to Classical Hebrew

PDF An Introduction to Classical Hebrew by Donald R. Vance in History

Description

“John Mack Faragher is one fine writer; bringing early L.A. to life as the setting for all manner of horrific killings and gruesome justice. Eternity Street will keep you up at night ruminating on the roots of American violence.”―Richard Wightman Fox; University of Southern California; author of Lincoln’s Body: A Cultural HistoryEternity Street tells the story of a violent place in a violent time: the rise of Los Angeles from its origins as a small Mexican pueblo. In a masterful narrative; John Mack Faragher relates a dramatic history of conquest and ethnic suppression; of collective disorder and interpersonal conflict. Eternity Street recounts the struggle to achieve justice amid the turmoil of a loosely governed frontier; and it delivers a piercing look at the birth of this quintessentially American city.In the 1850s; the City of Angels was infamous as one of the most murderous societies in America. Saloons teemed with rowdy crowds of Indians and Californios; Mexicans and Americans. Men ambled down dusty streets; armed with Colt revolvers and Bowie knives. A closer look reveals characters acting in unexpected ways: a newspaper editor advocating lynch law in the name of racial justice; hundreds of Latinos massing to attack the county jail; determined to lynch a hooligan from Texas.Murder and mayhem in Edenic southern California. "There is no brighter sun…no country where nature is more lavish of her exuberant fullness;" an Angeleno wrote in 1853. "And yet; with all our natural beauties and advantages; there is no country where human life is of so little account. Men hack one another to pieces with pistols and other cutlery as if God's image were of no more worth than the life of one of the two or three thousand ownerless dogs that prowl about our streets and make night hideous." This is L.A. noir in the act of becoming. 16 pages of illustrations

MccawHaving studied all the biblical languages and several other cognate languages; I have had the opportunity to make m; y way through numerous grammars. However; I have found few to be as effective in communicating the technical aspects of the language as efficiently as this grammar. Though it is labelled as an introduction; this work helps to equip the student of the Hebrew Scriptures with skills that will advance them beyond merely reading the text; but also encountering the nuances of the language. There is a logical procession from the basic rules of pronunciation to more technical aspects of grammar. Numerous exercises and paradigms help the student to understand and apply the skills they have acquired within the chapter. The chapters are organized in a logical sequence that builds on; and reinforces the previous material. Moreover; for those who have never studied another language; or have studied numerous languages; this grammar is a paradigm; which other grammars may imitate. From Qur'anic Arabic and Ethiopic to Homeric Greek; and other cognate languages between; I have been disappointed with few grammars. With others; I have been pleased. However; with this grammar; I consider this one of the best investments for studying the sacred Hebrew Bible that I have ever made. Additionally; I would recommend the BHS Hebrew Reader; by this same author. Dr. Vance is an accomplished philologists and grammarian.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Helpful ResourceBy C J MacKenzieI found Vance's textbook to be very informative. He seems to really know his area. I do find; however; that there are other Hebrew grammars that get the job done at a more attainable price; like Practico and Van Pelt's text for example. And because their text is published with Zondervan in the same strand as Mounce's Greek text; it has a handy accompanying workbook. But you can't go wrong with either text. That main question you must ask is how much are you willing to spend.4 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Classical Hebrew systematically.By David JohnsonDr. Vance's "Introduction to Classical Hebrew" was written for his biblical Hebrew class and it was then published. It is a systematic introduction to Biblical Hebrew and is very well suited for use in the classroom in a year long program. If you wish to pick up Hebrew outside the classroom this can be a useful aide; and should be used in conjunction with Vance's reader for Ruth. Look for future projects from Dr. Vance.
