In recent years; the nature of conflict has changed. Through asymmetric warfare radical groups and weak state actors are using unexpected means to deal stunning blows to more powerful opponents in the West. From terrorism to information warfare; the Wests air power; sea power and land power are open to attack from clever; but much weaker; enemies. In this clear and engaging introduction; Rod Thornton unpacks the meaning and significance of asymmetric warfare; in both civilian and military realms; and examines why it has become such an important subject for study. He seeks to provide answers to key questions; such as how weaker opponents apply asymmetric techniques against the Western world; and shows how the Wests military superiority can be seriously undermined by asymmetric threats. The book concludes by looking at the ways in which the US; the state most vulnerable to asymmetric attack; is attempting to cope with some new battlefield realities. This is an indispensable guide to one of the key topics in security studies today.

In particular; there are multiple images of bergs and growlers that are breathtaking. However; those of us interested in the story of the trip; its preparation; the re-creation of the ship; the research of the itinerary and; in general; in knowledge about either vikings' shipbuilding technology or seafaring will be greatly disappointed. The text provided in the book amounts to a few lines per page in very large font; and does not attempt to describe any of the research associated with this trip; or even any of the details of the trip itself. There is so little text across the whole book that it can be read in 10 to 15 minutes...If you intend to buy this book; be aware that this is a coffee table book: pictures only. I was interested in knowledge rather than photography - for me it was a total letdown.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Stunning picturesBy S. IversonThis book is a must have as a companion to W. Hodding Carters account of his time spent in a Viking Long boat. The pictures are well done and appropriate.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Viking Voyage is Valuable ReadingBy LanceRI read this book while staying at a Lodge in Newfoundland; just after visiting L'Anse aux Meadows where they landed their replica knarr at the end of their voyage; which made this book all the more real for me. You certainly have to applaud both the crews of the replica vessel as well as those original crews (that sailed to here without the benefit of modern technology) in such small crafts!
