Throne of Glass investigates the struggles; holy and profane; of the Umayyad régime from 695 to 715. In the process; it proposes new interpretations for the Qur'anic chapters 12; 19; 27; 28; 32; 37; and 38. The Umayyads had justified their rule by claiming the inheritance of the Biblical kings and prophets. That claim did not go unchallenged. The most fundamental challenge was that of Ibn al-Ash'ath; the sunnî revolution. At stake was whether the Commander of the Believers was the sole conduit of God’s will – as the Umayyads claimed – or if that Commander was; himself; a subject to God’s law. This monograph contends that the Islam which emerged from such challenges differed radically from the Islam which the Umayyad caliphs wanted.

I got rolled in a place like this once."By Don KidwellShort; oft funny account of a decent man I wished I had met personally. Sad at times given the tragedies that occurred in his life; but how can you not laugh at passages like; "A fellow told me he was going to hang-glider school. He said; 'I've been going for three months.' I said; 'How many successful jumps do you need to make before you graduate?' He said 'All of them.' " George Burns and him would have to be two of my all-time favorites for being funny without having to resort to being lewd. Great book and glad I gave it a read!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Red was one of the first to admit he like television rather than making moviesBy DutchRed was one of the first to admit he like television rather than making movies. As I understand it being an entertainer is a life of extremes of highs when working;then extreme lows afterward; I suppose this might explain the divorce rate. Eventhough Red was a nice person and just wanted to make people happy; he still hadtwo divorces. When I was young I did not care for his style of humor; however the older I got the betterRed got; sound familiar? His pantomime was absolutely great...But what floored me was Reds paintings; I don't care for his subject matter; clowns; buthe is an outstanding artist. It is said later when he when into it more; and not so muchentertaining he made more money do it than he had made entertaining..American Legends; History with the hide off....Dutch............3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One of a kindBy BulldogRed Skelton was one of a kind; just like Robin Williams; only Red Skelton was more visual. I was just 10 years old when he started his TV show; but when came on everybody was there. You also watched to see if he would get tickled; and tried to recover; that got everybody tickled; and then the whole skit would fall apart. Kids the next day would talk about the show. A clown; entertainer; showman; and mush loved comic describes Red Skelton. Sometimes I get to see or hear the old shows; and they as good now as they were then.
