A compelling story laden with Puritan theologyBy Jane MagillThis book is about an English woman; Anne Marbury Hutchinson who left England with her husband and 12 children in 1633 to come to Boston where she felt she could be free to practice her brand of Puritanism. She found out that many of the Puritan ministers in Boston were just as offended by her expressing her ideas as the hierarchy of the Church of England was. Women just did not do this.As a successful midwife she had the ear of many Boston women and she used it to her advantage; helping them to understand how to be saved. This apparently was a constant worry for Puritans. The women raved about Anne and soon she began having informal gatherings in her home for both men and women to discuss religious topics. Things began to deteriorate in the Puritan community when she started criticizing local Puritan ministers and their sermons at her informal gatherings. After complaints from the Puritan ministers the government got involved and soon Anne was charged and brought to trial.The story is a compelling one and well written; but the author spends a significant part of the book on the details of the differences in theology between the different Puritan factions in Boston. I knew women's lives were severely limited and controlled by men and society. But I did not know Anne Hutchinson's Story. Loved the storyBy ms beckyI could totally relate to Anne whose only crime was being a female minister who answered only to the Holy Spirit. As a female minister myself; I thank Anne for blazing the way. Amazing to me is that the religious Pilgrims thought they were 'free' to worship; yet created their own 'rules' that banished Anne. Good read.
