This is an excellent introduction to early military logistics and tactis of trains in wartime plus a brief intro to military development of wartime trains but I have some doubts about the amound of research done.. Unlike the photos in this book; the illustrations may not be accurate. There is no photo of the Seven Day Battle at Savage Station ( General Lee's) Confederate artillery battery train but by other historical accounts it didnot include side armor as shown on this book's artistic rendering on the front cover. A technical drawing created from an eye witness of first artillery battery car shows only a 45 degree front shield with no side protection. I was also disappointed that this book does not have the mechanical drawing of Union Army (US Military Rail Road) Cars - which I found in the public library. The USMRR had train cars designed to operate as a mobile hospital; supply depot; mess hall/kitchen; and soforth; Despite its weakness; this book covers topics rarely cover (e.g. observation ballon logistic support) so I would still recommend it as long as you used other souces as well. Another book I would recommend to a train modler would be "Civil War Railroads and Models" by Edwin P Alexander (c)1977 - I have a 1989 reprint - the detailed research on Armored cars from pp 211-220 is outstanding.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is a short narrative about railroads and their use during 'The American Civil War;' 'The War Between the States;' 'The War of Northern Aggression;' 'The War of Southern Secession;' etc. Not only does it cover the various ways trains were used and the impact on certain key battles; it provides some great pictures of the era; as well as some excellent drawings (in color) to create that wholesome interests in trains and the roles they played in a crucial period of American History.
