Essential Black History; a fine and important effort by a descendant of the founder of the town of AllensworthBy Mark PfennigstagAllensworth; the town; is now a California State Park and a monument to one of the most courageous; forceful; and resourceful of America's black citizens of the latter 19th and early 20th centuries.Col. Allen Allensworth began life as the child of a slave; ran away with the Union Army; joined that Army; and serving as a chaplain; rose to the rank of Colonel. After the Civil War; he came to California's Central Valley to establish a town especially for and by blacks to showcase; for blacks especially and for whites incidentally; what blacks could accomplish if left unencumbered by the deep and resentful prejudices of the day.Allensworth would be a ghost town today if it had not been for the efforts of Allensworth's descendants and those of some of the town's other founding residents. The town is worth a visit. Look it up on the Web and schedule a visit. If you can't get there; at least get the book. Blacks need to know about this - too many don't.
