The strong relationship that historians have described between the South and the trans-Appalachian West in the early nineteenth century had its origins in the twenty-year period after the American Revolution when a group of far-sighted southerners; with James Madison in the forefront; worked to form a political bond between the two regions. While many historians have taken this close relationship for granted or have dismissed it as a natural product of cultural similarities; strong family bonds and slavery being just two; it was built deliberately by a handful of forward-looking southerners with hard work and dedication. Jeffrey A. Zemler carefully analyzes the development of this bond and the history of these two regions during this twenty-year period; which is far more complicated than historians have imagined or described.

However. the brutality of the attack on Gaza last summer compelled me to dig deeper. I could not understand how a people who believe they are God’s chosen people and who suffered unspeakable brutality during the Holocaust; could wreak such death and destruction on a suppressed people with no Army; no Navy and no Air Force and who had nothing at all to do with the Holocaust..I started by Googling words like Belfour Declaration; the Irgun; the Nakba; the Stern Gang; King David Hotel; Plan Dalet; “mowing the lawn†and USS Liberty; to mention just a few. A new narrative started to emerge. It was a narrative that was very discomforting and at odds with what I had so firmly believed.Along the way I came across this book; which succinctly summarized and documented all I had discovered by Googling individual terms.If you have a hard time believing what is written in this book do your own research. The Zionist goal is to seize as much Palestinian land as possible even if it required the extermination of the Palestinians people on that land—Plan Dalet. It appears that Israel was born of death and destruction by Zionist terrorist groups—an inconvenient and discomforting truth.Albert Einstein was so incensed by this travesty; he wrote a letter to the NYT in which he presciently warned us against the Zionist fascists. Alison Weir presents the devious origins of zionism in the U.S. The description of the treachery of Louis Brandeis and Felix Frankfurter is simply shocking; as their actual activities are brought into the light for all to see.While Weir tells a very important story that most American don't know; she supports everything with stacks of facts. The book's endnotes are longer than the body of the book! This shows the care with which Weir has constructed her history.An important; if shocking; read.
