African American History Reconsidered is a fantastic historiographical work that enhances African American historiographyBy Jake ZirklePero Gaglo Dagbovie’s African American History Reconsidered examines a wide range of themes regarding African American history. Associate professor of history at Michigan State University; Pero Gaglo Dagbovie addresses numerous questions and issues pertaining to the interpretation and evolution of African American history. Dagbovie’s goal is to fill a gap in the existing historiography and present new perspectives on important historical issues and prominent African American historians. African American History Reconsidered reviews the various works of African American historians; while examining their methods and the implications of their work on the topic as a whole. Dagbovie discusses the conceptualization of black history; the teaching of black history; early black female historians; and numerous other related topics. Dagbovie conveys to the reader numerous definitions of black history; but he leaves the question “What is black history?” unanswered because it is a complex field that is still evolving. Dagbovie raises a substantial amount of intriguing questions as he analyzes his evidence. Particularly interesting is the section regarding the teaching of African American history. He is able to give a tremendous description of the role African Americans have played (or have not played) in the academic field; while also discussing issues with teaching African American history. He wrestles with the idea of integrating African American history into American history and the teaching of African American history as a separate; independent history. Using the work of historians before him; Dagbovie attempts to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. African American History Reconsidered is a fantastic historiographical work that enhances African American historiography. Dagbovie demonstrates his knowledge and his passion in this work and he is successful in making the reader ponder the issues that he addresses. With a compelling narrative and intriguing questions; Dagbovie has created an invaluable addition to the study of African American history.
