The JF/J2F "Duck" was one of those military workhorses moving around in the background before and during WWII that did a tremendous job but never got the publicity of its more glamorous teammates. Some said the Duck could be more aptly named the "Ugly Duckling". Be that as it may; when no other bomber could be found; it carried bombs. When no other transport could be found; it transported. When no other photo plane could be found; it photographed; and when no other rescuer could be found; it rescued. When it came to "Utility Craft"; the JF/J2F was the definitive.

PetersonThis is an interesting book! I've been curious about Admiral Byrd's expeditions over the poles for some time now after hearing alleged reports that he discovered openings to an underworld civilization on one of those expeditions; so this looked like the right book to purchase. The book does cover Byrd's expeditions over both poles; and discuses the existence of a Nazi facility that was built at the South Pole near the end of WW2. Byrd's investigations over the South Pole in 1947 were very likely related to this base where numerous Nazi Party officials were thought to have been in hiding. The stories about an underworld civilization were never officially acknowledged by our government; and Byrd was ordered not to discuss the subject publicly; this may have been just a cover-up disinformation story to avoid the rel subject about the Nazi base. Development of saucer-type aircraft by the German military late in the war are well documented; related German patents are referenced in the book; and can be found listed on the internet by doing a Google search on the German names. Just prior writing this review there was an AP report about an emergency flight to the South Pole to evacuate an individual from the National Science Foundation facility located there involved in doing environmental and seismographic testing as the medical capabilities at the base were incapable of treating the individuals condition. Two points reported by AP about this story that I find interesting are that this National Science Foundation facility has been in operation since 1956; and that the unnamed individual evacuated is an employee of Lockheed-Martin Corp.; which reportedly has been contracted to handle logistics for this facility; Really! Seems to me that a company like Lockheed would be more likely involved with aeronautical design ad development than logistics;
