When the French Revolution broke out in 1789; France possessed numerous colonies spread over three continents. To defend and keep the peace in these territories; a small army of colonial troops; distinct from the metropolitan line regiments or marines; had existed since the days of Louis XIV. This book examines the history and uniforms of the often-overlooked French armies in Saint-Domingue; Guadeloupe; Martinique; St Lucia; Tobago; Ile-de-France; La Réunion; Pondichéry; Guiana; Senegal and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. The text is backed by numerous illustrations offering a rare glimpse into dress and equipment of Napoleon's overseas army.

The photographer's family owns property on Mt Desert Island; some of which is a nature preserve you can visit. (Do it!) He knows every bit of Acadia / MDI and is a superlative photographer. The only photo book which rivals this one is First Light; by......Tom Blagden. It is out of print but WELL worth buying used. It was shot on film but stands up very well against Tom's new book.I have been going to Acadia for decades; have examined every photo book I have come across; and nothing touches Tom's work.9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. with nice large crisp beautiful photographs that portray both the intimacy ...By Sci-guyFINALLY! Somebody finally got it right! This coffee table book is a tour de force that does justice to this magnificent national park; with nice large crisp beautiful photographs that portray both the intimacy of the park as well as it's beautiful landscapes and wild life. I would imagine two things about Mr. Blagden: 1] that he spent A LOT of time photographing this park; and 2] that he really enjoyed doing so. I don't think he missed a thing. All the places I wish I could have photographed well; he did magnificently. This book will bring back precious memories to those who have been to Acadia; but it will also inspire those who have not seen this wondrous place to immediately start planning to do so. What a great celebration of the centennial of this magical place.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. And now 100 years...By HMS WarspiteIn 2016; Acadia National Park celebrated its centennial. This book is its official publication; a short collection of essays commemorating the birth of Acadia; its continuing relevance as a place of remarkable physical beauty; and its somewhat competing destiny as one of the popular; and most visited; national parks. The bulk of the book is given over to a superb collection of color photographs by Tom Blagden. The photos cover the main park and its satellite portions on Isle Au Haut and the Schoodic Peninsula. They are breathtaking; an invitation to come see the sights in person; and a warning of how fragile is the park if it is not cared for in its second 100 years. "Acadia National Park" is highly recommended as a souvenir of the park.
