Absolute Monarchs: A History of the Papacy

PDF Absolute Monarchs: A History of the Papacy by John Julius Norwich in History

Description

Like so many midwesterners since; Julia Daniels and Charles Scott Moseley moved to Florida in the 1880s seeking a warmer climate. This collection of Julia's letters - mainly to her husband; who made frequent business trips north; and to her close friend Eliza Slade - reveals the struggle of a cultured; urban woman adjusting to the hardship and isolation of life in pioneer Florida. Julia (herself a published writer) selected these unedited letters and copied them for her family into a thick leather book. Like characters in a novel; the friends and relatives she describes crackle with personality: a flamboyant Russian proclaims his version of communism; a New England spinster counters with Utopian visions; and a university professor retreats from the ivory tower to agricultural experimentation. Readers observe Julia's flair for making daily life cheerful and they meet the couple's two adored sons and Scott's children by an earlier marriage; as well as Cracker settlers; cattle runners; and assorted seekers of health or wealth.

Great read with lots of history to help us understand how the European world evolved.By trueblue americanAlthough a little tedious with details in spots; this was a fascinating read. The interrelationships between the popes and the royals was never presented so clearly. It is also evident that the word of God was not always as clear at times than at other times depending on the pope. The papacy today is so calm and easy to understand compared to what it was in the first 1500 years. The popes; antipopes; the female pope; the competition with Protestantism; Judaism and Islam was also enlightening. Even the naming of the popes was an education. The book ends with pope John Paul II. So it is both historic and somewhat current. Beware Catholics; you may get surprised and have your historic beliefs challenged.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Popes European HistoryBy Ray WalkerNorwich has written the most encyclopedic history of Europe the Papacy I've ever read; covering in detail from Peter to Benedict. I wished it had included the new Pope. The Palace intigues of European royalty; the wars; social upheavals; crimes; passions; stupidity; brilliance; it's all there. The book is LONG; but covering 2100 years does require a few more pages than the history of England. Well done;0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Fred GerkensConfirms what I always expected about the history of the church.
