A World Undone: The Story of the Great War; 1914 to 1918

DOC A World Undone: The Story of the Great War; 1914 to 1918 by G.J. Meyer in History

Description

The Apocalypse of John is a work of immense importance and learning. Yet among the major works of early Christianity included in the New Testament it has received relatively little scholarly attention. This work is a significant contribution to remedying this neglect. The author examines the meticulous literary artistry; creative imagination; radical political critique and profound theology of the Apocalypse of John. It is a sustained enterprise to understand both the form and the message of the Apocalypse in its literary and historical contexts. An invaluable and illuminating work for students; scholars and ministers.

The author does a masterful job pulling together the complex stories that led up to the war and how those played out on the battlefield. Meyer also pulls no punches when discussing the personalities involved and the idiotic decisions that lead to one of the greatest slaughters in modern history. I was a little surprised by the amount of humor the author brought to the book and at first it was a bit jarring; not something I expected to find in a work on such a horrific event. But the more I read; the more I appreciated his take on certain events; which can only be described as laughable; though in a "gallows" humor kind of way. I would add that this account easily took half of what I thought I knew about The Great War and dashed it to pieces. If you want to read one book that explains the First World War; this is it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Amazingly detailed and astute analysis of the Great WarBy Marko KloosThis book should be required reading for college level history. It describes in detail the events that would shape European history for the next hundred years. Everything would have been different without WWI; which toppled four empires and seeded resentments that would trigger WWII and result in the Cold War. Amazing; infuriating; enlightening read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great "general's account."By R. OsborneA very good "standing at a distance" synopsis of World War One with cleverly conceived "background" chapters that provide historical outlines of relevant topics. This is a generals account; however; with no real description of the war from the perspective of a common foot soldier or civilian. Still I found it to be an enjoyable and we'll written book that should be included in any moderately sized collection on the Great War.
