A Voice from the South (Dover Thrift Editions)

DOC A Voice from the South (Dover Thrift Editions) by Anna Julia Cooper in History

Description

Deep in the heart of the Himalayas; in remote valleys isolated from the outside world by snow for nine months of the year; the ancient kingdom of Zanskar seems light years away from modern existence. Olivier Follmi has made numerous trip to Zanskar over a 20-year period. The results of his travels are recorded in this volume; which contains photographs of the extraordinary landscape and portraits of its people; providing an insight into an existence that is now changing as contact with the modern world increases. In complement to the photographs; delicate watercolours by Rapkar Wangchuk seek to recreate the quintessential images of Tibetan Buddhism. A commentary tells the story of the author's fascination with Zanskar and records the rites and customs of an exceptional people in a Buddhist land where religion and its observance define a way of life.

Anna Julia Cooper is a jewel and a gem of a black American woman scholar! Her analyses are spot-on! Her turn of the 19th century elocution and turn of phrase is only rivaled by its rich literary; historical and anthropological content! She is superb as is her book!4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Amazing CourageBy B. ShawThis is a book written by a courageous black woman in the 1890's encouraging Human Rights; better education for women and women's rights. She was an outstanding teacher and her motto was Not the boys less; but the girls more. She spoke often on the subject of improving the status of Black Women on platforms with outstanding men; such as; Frederick Douglas and W. E. B. Du bois. She is on the 32nd African-American U. S. postage stamp. Her thoughts on human rights are in every passport issued in this country. She was born in slavery but died with a PhD from the Sorbonne. She is a great inspiration to all women.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A good bookBy ventingisokI don't know who Ms. Cooper is. This is for my kid who likes inspirational books; and I thought (from a radio review) that her life story is definitely interesting. The book itself is 6x9" and better quality soft cover book. The print size is also for best reading; in my opinion.
