Winner of the 2016 A. M. Pate; Jr. Award in Civil War History from the the Fort Worth Civil War Round TableWinner of the 2016 Fray Francisco Atanasio DomÃnguez Award from the Historical Society of New MexicoThe Civil War in New Mexico began in 1861 with the Confederate invasion and occupation of the Mesilla Valley. At the same time; small villages and towns in New Mexico Territory faced raids from Navajos and Apaches. In response the commander of the Department of New Mexico Colonel Edward Canby and Governor Henry Connelly recruited what became the First and Second New Mexico Volunteer Infantry. In this book leading Civil War historian Jerry Thompson tells their story for the first time; along with the history of a third regiment of Mounted Infantry and several companies in a fourth regiment.Thompson’s focus is on the Confederate invasion of 1861–1862 and its effects; especially the bloody Battle of Valverde. The emphasis is on how the volunteer companies were raised; who led them; how they were organized; armed; and equipped; what they endured off the battlefield; how they adapted to military life; and their interactions with New Mexico citizens and various hostile Indian groups; including raiding by deserters and outlaws. Thompson draws on service records and numerous other archival sources that few earlier scholars have seen. His thorough accounting will be a gold mine for historians and genealogists; especially the appendix; which lists the names of all volunteers and militia men.

A Must Read For History Lovers!By Traci FanninDr Virginia Bernhard's book; "A Tale of Two Colonies: What Really Happened in Virginia Bermuda?" is filled with very interesting facts of the two colonies. As the English were busy trying to settle in the New World; the Sea Venture was busy trying to stay afloat on the Atlantic. The survivors of the Sea Venture; wrecked their ship onto the shores of present day Bermuda. Their mission delayed for 2/3 of a year and the colonists tried their best to make due with what they had. Dr Bernhard also teaches the reader about the almost ill fated colony of Jamestowne and how the survivors of the Sea Venture were desperately needed at James Fort.Dr Bernhard talks and teaches to the reader. She does not talk below or above the reader. She entwines the facts and reality; creating a picture of hardships the English colonists had to endure--not only in Bermuda but in Virginia too.She has weaves the facts of both English colonists (the colonists in Virginia and the colonists in Bermuda) to show how both were faced with obstacles of hardships; mutiny; desertion; and the strong will to survive.Dr Bernhard made me further understand the parallels of both colonies. Her book is filled with rich facts and I recommend this book for all levels of readers.5 stars for a well written book!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. History you can understandBy PaulThis book fills in all the information you need to understand what happened after Columbus arived up till the Revolutionary war. I found it completly captivating to learn of how the early companies and other undertakings were founded. It is almost like what I think what goes on in modern undertakings. And Professor Bernhard's style of writting is wonderful. Almost in a conversational tone she leads one thru the stories. And still there is enough documentation and research tales to let you know that this story is the truth and not any sort of fiction.I've got a good answer to "read any good books lately"? I certainly have; take a look at "A Tale of Two Colonies".2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. very informativeBy Frances JonesI learned a great deal about both the early settlements of Virginia and Bermuda. I applaud all the tedious research that made this book possible. It is amazing what goes on behind the scenes of any government bureaucracy. Personalities; subterfuge; and the desire to invest in "get rich schemes" occurs in the past and in the present.
