Cavalry winning; generals losing.By Lady Of the Dark TowerJoe Wheeler was a small man; just five feet two inches tall; but he stood large in the Confedate cavalry. His hometown was Augusta; Georgia; where the south had it largest and in fact its only powder works. At the beginning of the war after West Point Wheeler found himself leading cavalry under a mediocre general. He was prone to exaggerate his own unit; making it bigger and stronger and more successful than it was. This book details very well the reputation of the half-starved and almost naked Confederate soldiers; who finally had a reputation of foraging among the citizenry of the Confederacy which almost equalled in voraciousness the habits of Sherman's Bummers. But Joe was a dogged fighter and kept his men on the rampage against Kilpatrick all through South Carolina; doing his best against impossible odds.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lost HistoryBy meadoc1If you study the Civil War; when was the last time you read about General Joseph Wheeler? The soldier is fascinating. He bested Sherman multiple times and was essentially the only one to oppose Sherman's march to the sea. One of only two generals to return to the Federal army later in life to serve as Teddy Roosevelt's commanding officer in Cuba during the Spanish American war. A history of a Civil War leader rarely mentioned in most books.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy David H McElreathGreat book; easy reading; and very informative on the life of Gen. Wheeler and his exploits as both an officer in Confederacy and also in our national forces during Spanish American War.
