To obtain sacred relics; medieval monks plundered tombs; avaricious merchants raided churches; and relic-mongers scoured the Roman catacombs. In a revised edition of Furta Sacra; Patrick Geary considers the social and cultural context for these acts; asking how the relics were perceived and why the thefts met with the approval of medieval Christians.

A Comprehensive and Fluid readBy Trap49I've read literally dozens of books on WW2; seen dozens of movies about it; and watched dozens of documentary videos (History Channel; Ken Burns; etc.). Most of the material is biased from the American viewpoint; which is fine; as the US took many casualties in the first years; before mobilizing fully and then prevailing. Biased or not; it usually made for good reading and viewing. But a comprehensive; big-picture treatment of the war always meant multi-volume sets; which can get tiresome; by the time you get to the end; you've forgotten most of the beginning and middle portions. James Stokesbury has done a remarkable job with this single-volume edition. He gives a chronological summary; switching between the European Continent and the Pacific; so there is never a gap in the timeline. He is critical of both the Allies and Axis powers where appropriate; a refreshing change from the pro-USA treatment that is so common in the previous books I've read. I feel well-informed for the first time about World War 2; so now it's time to read Stokesbury's volume on World War 1.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. excellentBy Texcellent0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I wanted a short consice history and that is what I gotBy MrGmanI am a history buff but all of my reading and study was from the revolutionary period to the 1880s. I thought it was time to broaden my knowledge and this was a good start as it have me some good information about the BIG war and more important gave me some great places to go to target in areas I want to learn more about. I know some of the write ups about this book have been in a lot of detail about the pros and cons but for my purposes and for anyone who wants some introductory information this is a good place to start or at least I thought so.
