DOC A Russian Diary: A Journalist's Final Account of Life; Corruption; and Death in Putin's Russia by Anna Politkovskaya in History

Description

A marvelous introduction to the American Revolution..told with wit; compassion; and insight. Brian Kelly not only understands the history; he appreciates the people who made it. – Thomas Fleming; author of The Intimate Lives of the Founding FathersThe Revolution You Never Knew ...Beyond the deadly skirmishes; determined generals; and carefully penned words of a powerful declaration lie countless forgotten stories that tell the tale of our nation'~ birth. Read intimate accounts of the fight for independence as colonial families recall their tense encounters with brutal British soldiers; women participate in military initiatives and become powerful social advocates; and leaders reveal the intricacies of their motivations and personal lives. Join the ranks of America's first Patriots as they unite to declare their independence:****Old Man Wyman of Woburn; nothing more than a mysterious and deadly figure atop a white horse; mounted a solitary pursuit against the British as they retreated from Concord back to Boston; effectively striking fear deep into the hearts of the redcoats as he diminished their numbers one-by-one.****Inventor David Bushnell; desperate to aid the outnumbered American naval forces; both befuddled and alarmed British forces when he devised a working prototype for the world's first underwater torpedo and-most impressively – a submersible boat dubbed the "Turtle;" America's first submarine.****South Carolina sisters-in-law Grace and Rachel Martin; carrying rifles and dressed in their husbands' clothing; intercepted important dispatches bound for a nearby British fort when they ambushed the courier and two armed escorts by brandishing their weapons and speaking with deep voices.

Attention college studentsBy malloryIf you're looking for a book reference in regards to comparative international constitutional law for a research paper this was my holy grail. This is an excellent source from someone living in Putins Russia and the lack of freedom of expression. This book also has an index so you don't have to read the full book to find what you're looking for. I give this book 5 stars for my research class!!!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Anna Politkovskaya was definitely one of the best. Politkovskaya's writings earned her respect and made her one of the nation's best known journalists. In October 2006 she was shot and killed in what is believed to be a contract killing by an unknown gunman while riding an elevator in her apartment building. The book is Politkovskaya's journalistic diary covering the period from the Russian elections of December 2003 to the tragic aftermath of the Beslan school siege in late 2005. It is an intriguing look at the truth inside Putin's Russia; a gripping "must read"!13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A Sad and Depressing Story!By Gilberto VillahermosaAnna Politkovskaya's "Russian Diary" is a gold mine of information and provides unparalleled insights into Putin's Neo-Soviet Russia. Many believe that Politkovskaya was murdered for her indepth investigative reporting into all aspects of Putin's regime. In this book she makes it clear that Russia is rapidly sliding into a dark and deep abyss.Politkovskaya reveals the rampant corruption prevalent in the Russian government and its total disregard for the Russian population; human rights; and basic democratic principles."Russian Diary" is a first-hand account of the growing power of Russia's criminal community and its alliance with Vladimir Putin; the rampant greed and lawlessness of the new Russian business elite; the unbridled brutality of the Russian security services; and the gross incompetence of the Russian military.Politkovskaya believed that Russia was headed for another major war in the Caucasus against the mountain peoples it has been terrorizing and murdering for the last decade. This is a sad and depressing story that is all too familiar to those with firsthand knowledge of the Soviet Union and Russia.
