THE AMERICAN PAGEANT enjoys a reputation as one of the most popular; effective; and entertaining texts in American history. The colorful anecdotes; first-person quotations; and trademark wit bring American history to life. A new feature; "Contending Voices;" offers paired quotes from original historical sources; accompanied by questions that prompt you to think about conflicting perspectives on controversial subjects. Additional aids make the book as accessible as it is enjoyable: part openers and chapter-ending chronologies provide a context for the major periods in American history; while other features present primary sources; scholarly debates; and key historical figures for analysis.

However; some content is put together strangely in some of the chapters and the book does not always present the most in depth and well rounded point of view on some historical topics.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Impressive biographies of contributors to A People and a Nation; Volume 1: to 1877By John and KarenI bought this book for a student and had time to review it before giving it to her. I was very impressed by the authors the contributed to it. The student brings it to my house and reads sections to me. She learns while reading it and I enjoy the stories. We discuss current events compared to history. She has promised to share it with me after she finishes the course.
