All OIF vets; and politicians; should read this.By Black; MatthewAs a x2 Iraq vet; I was always troubled and interested in the modern history of the middle east. If you want a really gut wrenching account of how the west completely screwed up an entire region; look no further. The incompetence of civic leaders; their blatant arrogance and greed; their backdoor dealings and re-dealings; the political swings; the sheer luck of some incidents; and the silliness of so-called "intellectuals"; comes to the fore in this great book. If you have dreams of quality international politics or agreements; this book will shatter them. Many of the accounts could easily have been written today and be believable. The book is well divided into chapters; but requires careful reading to keep up with the people; places; and politics. A quick bio of key players right at the outset would have been quite beneficial.Only giving it four stars because it really needs some full-page maps; particularly for the campaigns and showing national boundaries in the 1918s. Finding a quality map of the late Ottoman empire and modern middle east is essential if you're going to follow the campaigns; as the map is unfortunately devoid of any maps. GoogleEarth was a great help; and you can also get an idea for the key terrain (Hejaz for example)2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Epic drama; and real life.By L. MurguiaThis is an amazing; extremely well researched; easy to read; detailed enough story of the events that took place during and after WW I in the Middle East. The author based the book on the actual archives and documents from both sides ( actually many sides ). It is great to see how the 'Great Game' of the XIX century among Great Britain; France and Russia; shaped the events during WW I. This is perhaps the best book I have read about the Middle East; and clearly explains many of the causes of the challenges that the regions faces today. This is a must read book for anybody ( whether living in or outside the Middle East ); to understand the dramatic events that have shaped the lives of millions of people in the world.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Deja vu all over again.By Robert E. JastrowFor anyone interested in the history of the Middle East and especially for any one concerned with what is going on there now; this is a must read! In its scope and breadth; it is probably the best explanation of why Syria and Iraq are failed states and why England and France are probably to blame for much of the mess that exists there now. Pay attention to Russia's involvement in comparison to Czar Putin's moves today.
