In this colorful book; rich photographs and oral histories of 29 Southern quilts that survived the Civil War offer perspectives on life in the South during the most turbulent time in American history. Sadly; we do not have Annie Dardent's Disunion Quilt; but among those featured are… Confederate Cradle Quilt - a work of red and white silk and black velvet made by Mrs. Robert E. Lee; Mrs. Jefferson Davis; and friends in 1863 in Richmond; Virginia Alabama Gunboat Quilt - an appliqued; embroidered; and stuffed quilt produced and sold as part of a campaign to raise funds to build Confederate gunboats Irish Chain with Applique - a prewar quilt given to a wounded Northern soldier by a kindly Southern Lady who nursed him back to health

McLendonI have been hard pressed over the years to find a good book that gets into as great as detail as this book does about the Confederate Navy. I found myself enjoying the read; which is written so even non-history buffs will be able to follow along and become engrossed in the struggles between the North and South’s Navies – even though the North had more ships. It even includes interesting historical facts that you don’t find in so many other books written on the subject; such as Moses Austin; a free black slave that contributed to the Confederate Naval Service – who died in the attack on the U.S.S Water Witch.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Best Confederate Naval historyBy CustomerThis history is exceptional in its depth of research and readability. Luraghi stands head and shoulders above U.S. Civil War history authors. It's worth the price.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Virtute Et Armis; (by valor and arms)By Richard BMr. Luraghi weaves the highly detailed adventure story about the South and her ability to create something from nothing; a Navy! His account beings together a tale about the time period and the brave sailors who lived it. This is not an Orwellian rewrite of history for the PC current minded but a well researched document detailing brave men fighting on the high seas and Southern rivers to create a nation.
