A History of Religious Ideas; Vol. 2: From Gautama Buddha to the Triumph of Christianity

DOC A History of Religious Ideas; Vol. 2: From Gautama Buddha to the Triumph of Christianity by Mircea Eliade in History

Description

Immigration; writes Maldwyn Allen Jones; was America's historic raison d'être. Reminding us that the history of immigration to the United States is also the history of emigration from somewhere else; Mr. Jones considers the forces that uprooted emigrants from their homes in different parts of the world and analyzes the social; economic; and psychological adjustments that American life demanded of them—adjustments essentially the same for the Jamestown settlers and for Vietnamese refugees. As well as measuring the impact of America on the lives of the sixty million or so immigrants who have arrived since 1607; he assesses their role in industrialization; the westward movement; labor organization; politics; foreign policy; the growth of American nationalism; and the theory and practice of democracy. In this new edition; Jones brings his history of immigration to the United States up to 1990. His new chapter covers the major changes in immigration patterns caused by changes in legislation; such as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965."It is done with a grasp of regional; chronological; national and racial information; plus that 'feel' for the situation which can come only from the vast resources and a gift for interpretation."—A. T. DeGroot; Christian Century "A scholarly contribution; based on a thorough mastery of the subject."—Carl Wittke; Journal of Southern History

Religious Thought in Its Historical; Political; and Social InfluencesBy JudeI am revisiting Eliade whom i read years ago and who provided for me my first taste of comparative religion. I am thoroughly enjoying the experience. This series is highly academic. Some of Eliade's ideas have been discounted over the years; but he is still the master of thoughtful; well researched texts that truly explain both religious history and philosophy. This time around I was more interested in Judaism and early Christianity than Buddhism or Mithra. Eliade provides the perfect political explanations for what were significant changes in belief among the Hebrews that; in turn; ushered in the success of Christianity. This is not a text for the devout believer whose faith cannot withstand historical fact or who cannot examine the ways in which religious beliefs are shaped and changed by the events of politics and everyday life. Serious students of religion will benefit highly from time spent with Eliade.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great.By CustomerThese compilations on the History of Religions around the world are great and very easy to read. They are a must for anyone interested in the subject of comparative religion and mythology and the discovery of the psychological archetypes that are universally found around the world and in all ages. A History of Religious Ideas is written in a very friendly manner and exposes the universal principles of religion in the history of humanity. We will add as a notice that we encountered the 4th volume to this set. The 3rd Volume of this series ends with section 318 which deals with Tibetan Religions. The 4th volume which is originally Geschite der religiosen Ideen; III/2 (and that we have the Spanish translation) goes from Chapter XL to L and continues the 3 Vol. series with the section number of 319. The 4th part of this series deals with religion in Center-America; Taoism; Indonesia; Oceania; Australia; West Africa; East and Central Africa; South American Shamanism; North American Sioux-Oglala religion; Japanese religion; and the secularization in Europe until our times. It seems the original work of Eliade was 440 sections of which the 3 volumes cover 318. There is also the work that is an extension of this compendium which is titled From Primitives to Zen: A Thematic Sourcebook on the History of Religions. These works revolutionize the way we see religion. Eliade; with a historical worldview of religion shows us the reality of "homo religiosus" as Eliade says.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy P. RawatThkx
