In 1776; during America's War for Independence; Gowan Pamphlet formed the first African-American Christian congregation in America. In 1793; Gowan's congregation was accepted into the Dover Baptist Association becoming the first African-American Baptist church in that body. I took a class called the history of Florida and it was a great class but this really told the story through black eyes. I recommend this book to anyone who lives or grew up in Florida.
