Description

Written when political and military history dominated the discipline; J. Franklin Jameson's The American Revolution Considered as a Social Movement was a pioneering work. Based on a series of four lectures he gave at Princeton University in 1925; the short book argued that the most salient feature of the American Revolution had not been the war for independence from Great Britain; it was; rather; the struggle between aristocratic values and those of the common people who tended toward a leveling democracy. American revolutionaries sought to change their government; not their society; but in destroying monarchy and establishing republics; they in fact changed their society profoundly. Jameson wrote; "The stream of revolution; once started; could not be con.ned within narrow banks; but spread abroad upon the land.? Jameson's book was among the first to bring social analysis to the fore of American history. Examining the effects the American Revolution had on business; intellectual and religious life; slavery; land ownership; and interactions between members of different social classes; Jameson showed the extent of the social reforms won at home during the war. By looking beyond the political and probing the social aspects of this seminal event; Jameson forced a reexamination of revolution as a social phenomenon and; as one reviewer put it; injected a "liberal spirit" into the study of American history. Still in print after nearly eighty years; the book is a classic of American historiography.

The writer leans strongly towards western thought but that has been the case with most books written on church history in the west. Strengths of the text include excellent foot notes; generalized summaries are a fair length appropriate for instruction; and the book is an excellent complimentary book to his other work The Story of Christianity with minimal overlap. There is little weakness to the text. There are a few occasions of things that are in conjecture are presented as fact; but overall I am quiet satisfied with it. This is a go to text I use when instructing others in my local church on church history. I was first introduced to this text in my graduate studies; but would feel comfortable working through the text with anyone at a college level or up.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Historical AcurracyBy Robert B. FongChristian Thought is a necessary text that every seminarian and lay person needs to have on their book shelf. It would not hurt journalists who cover religious issues either. This text does not take any particular bent favoring one demonimation or another; it only describes the chain of events; the actors; and their rational for advancing their particular school's theological thinking discussing the Trinity and Christology. It also demonstrates that the Council of Nicea was in fact an unsettling but pivitol event in the history of the christian church. Clearly; issues of the Western and Eastern churches are illuminated and one discovers the clear difference between the two camps that in some cases are driven by the Roman Emporers. While not a novel; and intended to be a text book; it does however; read like a novel with political and spiritual intrigue that make one want to move on to the next chapter. Excellent; well written and easy reading for layiety and pastoral communites alike.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Poor Kindle edition. Pages don't match or there are multiple "page 96" etc. I can't even get a refund because by the time our course covered the book; it was too late.
