Notions of magic and healing have been changing over past years and are now understood as reflecting local ideas of power and agency; as well as structures of self; subjectivity and affect. This study focuses on contemporary urban Russia and; through exploring social conditions; conveys the experience of living that makes magic logical. By following people's own interpretations of the work of magic; the author succeeds in unraveling the logic of local practice and local understanding of affliction; commonly used to diagnose the experiences of illness and misfortune.

The descriptions were lovely but a bit too much at times as they went on and on.The one thing I did take from it; which is no small thing; is that the silencing of the mind is the key to finding God. But I did not need to read an entire book to get this Truth.Several years ago I had read A Search in Secret Egypt;also by Paul Brunton and really loved it. So I guess I was expecting something more along those same lines only in a different part of the world. I have been to the Himalayas myself and so would have liked to read more on the mystical experience.I have purchased A Search in Secret India by Paul Brunton and hope it will be a better read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. DelightfulBy A customerBrunton is a favorite spiritual writer of mine. I read several of his books in my youth; and have revisited them recently with pleasure. I am an armchair traveler to the Himalayas with this sensitive seeker. Brunton's writing becomes at times poetic in this solitude of immeasurable natural beauty. It took me away from the hectic world I live in.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One StarBy CustomerMore like a traveler's guide to the Himalayas. Little or nothing to do with the metaphysical. Very disappointed!
