Description

Although the idea that all human beings are descended from Adam is a long-standing conviction in the West; another version of this narrative exists: human beings inhabited the Earth before; or alongside; Adam; and their descendants still occupy the planet. In this engaging and provocative work; David N. Livingstone traces the history of the idea of non-adamic humanity; and the debates surrounding it; from the Middle Ages to the present day. From a multidisciplinary perspective; Livingstone examines how this alternative idea has been used for cultural; religious; and political purposes. He reveals how what began as biblical criticism became a theological apologetic to reconcile religion with science―evolution in particular―and was later used to support arguments for white supremacy and segregation. From heresy to orthodoxy; from radicalism to conservatism; from humanitarianism to racism; Adam's Ancestors tells an intriguing tale of twists and turns in the cultural politics surrounding the age-old question; "Where did we come from?"

This was an excellent book and of great interest to me as I ...By Alice GordonThis was an excellent book and of great interest to me as I know one of the Deputy Commanders from Tiananmen Square; have many Chinese friends from the Mainland whom I know very well; and I have two half-Chinese grandchildren. I highly recommend it as an inside look at what happened in China in 1989 and as the growing-up and spiritual journey of a very unusual young woman.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Moving AccountBy Betsy GI read this book a year ago and have since purchased it for several friends. It is educational from a historical perspective; as well as a moving account of Chai Ling's personal experience. The life she has lived is unfathomable to those of us who have never lived under an oppressive government. I loved reading of how she allowed tragedy--both national and personal--to guide and shape her. This book sheds light on such important issues as the One Child Policy and human rights violations that persist in China and many other nations. After reading this book; you will feel moved to action on behalf of those subjected to injustice in many parts of the world. I highly recommend it!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Read this book!By Anita PattersonIn this inspiring memoir; Chai Ling affirms the importance of creative dialogue to protect the lives of young students protesting around the world. Her painful; yet hopeful journey in search of love; faith; and freedom tells a story that is deeply inscribed in the American tradition. This is a book everyone should read. It wisely teaches us to confront the burden of history; to discover our own potential for growth; and; in doing so; to bridge the divides among nations; races; political factions; and world cultures.
