The firebrand hero of New Orleans; Vicksburg and Fort Fisher; David Dixon Porter was one of the most distinguished Union admirals to fight in the Civil War - and the most controversial. He rose from lieutenant to rear-admiral in less than two years; fighting in more battles and winning more laurels than any other senior officer. Early on he demonstrated a rare combination of tireless energy; unusual intelligence; remarkable innovativeness; and a hard-driven fighting instinct that compared with generals Grant and Sherman. But he also got into countless scrapes and had to extricate himself from many near disasters; and he lived his life with many detractors. Today Porter is counted amount the most colorful U.S. naval officers who ever commanded a squadron.
