A Fragile Freedom (Society and the Sexes in the Modern World)

ebooks A Fragile Freedom (Society and the Sexes in the Modern World) by Erica Armstrong Dunbar in History

Description

The dramatic untold story of how Norman Vincent Peale and a handful of conservative allies fueled the massive rise of religiosity in the United States during the 1950s Near the height of Cold War hysteria; when the threat of all-out nuclear war felt real and perilous; American minister Norman Vincent Peale published The Power of Positive Thinking. Selling millions of copies worldwide; the book offered a gospel of self-assurance in an age of mass anxiety. Despite Peale's success and his ties to powerful conservatives such as Dwight D. Eisenhower; J. Edgar Hoover; and Joseph McCarthy; the full story of his movement has never been told. Christopher Lane shows how the famed minister's brand of Christian psychology inflamed the nation's religious revival by promoting the concept that belief in God was essential to the health and harmony of all Americans. We learn in vivid detail how Peale and his powerful supporters orchestrated major changes in a nation newly defined as living "under God." This blurring of the lines between religion and medicine would reshape religion as we know it in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

I especially appreciate having my phone back to 100% almost three times from close to empty when I am on a bicycle or camping with no electricity around. So I was upset when I couldn’t get my charger to work after almost a year — but after reporting the problem; they sent me a new one! Best product and company. They made me a customer. As a Northern CA resident; this charger was critically important during the evacuation and aftermath.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Evolution from slavery to indenture to "fragile freedom"By abj6/22/09 the contents of author Dunbar's book is described in much detail via a ques. and ans. interview on the Comcast Cable "community programs' of Pennsylvania's Book Tours. According to Dunbar; her book focuses on the slavery environment in the North (especially in Pennsylvania; New York; Maryland and Delaware) and the period of time:its inception in America;in the 1700's almost a century prior to the Civil War); and inclusive of "the whys"(aka reasons)besides the obvious "ethical reasons"; for the end of slavery for slaves of African descent;especially with Pennsylvania laws which began their attrition out of slavery in most cases(around age 28) much due to the Quaker influence. Another book on that topic "geography(the north/but in Haley's book also in the south) Alex Haley's book ;a fiction;"A Different kind of Christmas)does much on the environment(especially the Quakers) in Philadelphia using a free black(a male of African descent)who became a successful entrepreneur...Dunbar's non fiction obviously reflects much research in this nonfiction work and how it affected the lives and psyche of many.
