The Battle of Midway is traditionally held as the point when Allied forces gained advantage over the Japanese. In Islands of Destiny; acclaimed historian and military intelligence expert John Prados points out that the Japanese forces quickly regained strength after Midway and continued their assault undaunted. Taking this surprising fact as the start of his inquiry; he began to investigate how and when the Pacific tide turned in the Allies’ favor. Using archives of WWII intelligence reports from both sides; Prados offers up a compelling reassessment of the true turning in the Pacific: not Midway; but the fight for the Solomon Islands. Combat in the Solomons saw a series of surface naval battles; including one of the key battleship-versus-battleship actions of the war; two major carrier actions; daily air duels; including the aerial ambush in which perished the famous Japanese naval commander Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku; and many other hair-raising exploits. Commencing with the Allied invasion of Guadalcanal; Prados shows how and why the Allies beat Japan on the sea; in the air; and in the jungles.

I doubt it but it is incredibly thought-provoking and something all Christians should consider and think about. As a conservative-minded (but not fundamentalist) Christian; I kept saying to myself "Yes!" "Exactly!" while reading this book. In the past; I was one of those Christians who was so politically-motivated that I lost the true meaning of being a follower of Christ. These days; I am so sick of both sides of the political spectrum that I do not identify with either one. My feelings have grown stronger about the importance of the church backing off of politics and getting back into the real task of being a Christian - to be a light in a dark world by following Christ's example in how he lived in the everyday world. Jonathan reminds us that we don't have to allow others' expressions of faith define our own experience with it. While others may help guide us and can shape our faith; we must learn to collect those influences and move forward into a deeper; more personal faith that we can truly call our own.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Truly Following Christ; Not a Political PartyBy Robert JohnsonFinally a book that sets out how far the church of Jesus Christ has strayed from what Christ intended it to be. Merritt describes how the Southern Baptist Convention in particular; but most so-called 'evangelical' churches in America; have become simply spiritual arms of the political party system; the Republican Party in particular. As a result of the vitriol and political pandering and lobbying; the Gospel of Christ has been substituted for a 'gospel' of how to take and use political power. The church in America has been going downhill for many years; and Merritt points out that this is due in large part to the politization of the the evangelical church. The fight against abortion and gay rights has overtaken the Beatitudes in importance. Consequently younger Christians are fleeing the church in droves. A great analysis. A must read.
