In 1863; the Union was unable to adequately fill its black regiments. In an attempt to remedy that; Colonel James Montgomery led a raid up the Combahee River on June 2 to gather recruits and punish the plantations. Aiding him was an expert at freeing slaves--famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman. The remarkable effort successfully rescued about 750 enslaved men; women and children. Only one soldier was killed in the action; which marked a strategy shift in the war that took the fight to civilians. Join author Jeff W. Grigg as he details the fascinating true story that became a legend.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. and containing a helpful timeline of key events and an excellent selection of suggested books and moviesBy MBA Brief History of the Cold War; by Lee Edwards and Elizabeth Edwards Spalding; is a compelling account of a defining historical period. Incredibly readable (should take the college-educated reader no more than three hours); and containing a helpful timeline of key events and an excellent selection of suggested books and movies; this book is well suited to the high school and college classroom alike. Highly recommended for those looking for a general overview of the Cold War or for an introduction prior to more serious and detailed study. Essential reading for the Millenial generation for whom the Cold War is not even a distant memory.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I do think that he was writing under tough space/word restrictions; and that this matter led to some oversimplifications. I believe that Dr. Edwards has proved his abilities over the years; and has earned the right to publish history free from such heavy-handed restrictions. That would have made this a five star review; rather than four stars.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Making sense out of the Cold warBy Thomas F.
