There have been many studies of the generals who commanded the Union's victorious Army of the Potomac; but none has considered the corps; division; and brigade commanders (and their all-important staff officers) through the entire war--until now. Placing their actions in the social; political; military; and economic context of the day; this original and thought-provoking book examines in meticulous detail the command and performance of the brave and controversial officers of the Union's main fighting force. This study in command; the first of a multi-volume work; is based entirely on manuscript sources; many of which have never before been examined. As a result; the narrative and conclusions about the actions of many of the Union's prominent generals differ--often significantly--from traditional historical thinking. What emerges is a much different picture of these men and how their personalities influenced their command decisions and the political atmosphere that influenced and determined their military careers. The Army of the Potomac is about the leaders as men--their successes and failures commanding the Union's largest army.

A history book written by someone who was there.By FHPA very dry book (1891) by the author which details the history of the Black Regiment in which he served during the Civil War. It is not a modern day action adventure but a history book written by someone who was there. There is no sugar coating or politically correct language in the book. Although; I would suppose that; for the time period it was politically correct. It contains the story of Stephen A Ellison who was the first black commissioned officer in the US Army. In my opinion; that alone; makes it a book to read.I have rated this book 4 stars. I have given it this rating because you will have to be dedicated to work your way through the strictly fact based details.I obtained this book from in Kindle format.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good bookBy Sharon HamiltonI thought the book was very informative however I thought it would have been better if the author would have omitted the speeches and newspaper articles that he included word for word.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Bravo for our Black TroopsBy Joseph C. NelsonAt last a history of the operations of our black troops in the civil war. They did more for our country in that conflict than people of that era were ready to disclose. My sincere thanks to Captain Emilio..
