audiobook 1: The Monotheists: Jews; Christians; and Muslims in Conflict and Competition; Volume I: The Peoples of God by F. E. Peters in History

Description

Hindu nationalism came to world attention in 1998; when the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won national elections in India. Although the BJP was defeated nationally in 2004; it continues to govern large Indian states; and the movement it represents remains a major force in the world's largest democracy. This book presents the thought of the founding fathers and key intellectual leaders of Hindu nationalism from the time of the British Raj; through the independence period; to the present. Spanning more than 130 years of Indian history and including the writings of both famous and unknown ideologues; this reader reveals how the "Hindutuva" movement approaches key issues of Indian politics. Covering such important topics as secularism; religious conversion; relations with Muslims; education; and Hindu identity in the growing diaspora; this reader will be indispensable for anyone wishing to understand contemporary Indian politics; society; culture; or history.

When you are seeking to define a theological set of beliefs you really need to do your research. With the question being "Do I sufficiently understand the definition and application of this belief so that I can relate it clearly and accurately to my readers". Is this possible one might ask; and the answer is a definite yes. Every faith; at least all those who have a written text of their faith; has a book or series of books that defines the details and application of the faith. In Christianity this would be various systematic theology text that are used in the training provided by the particular faith including graduation from seminary. There are several theological text that are across the board by several different Christian "denominations" such as: Christian Theology by M.Erickson; Theology for the Community of God by Stanley Grenz; A Systematic Theology of the Christian Religion by Oliver Buswell. Also Critical Commentaries such as The New Interpreters Bible Commentary and the Word Biblical Commentary providing Greek exegesis of the Biblical Text. And the same type of in depth material are available for all the worlds major faiths. These basic beliefs are too important to begin a study with incomplete or inaccurate understanding and then attempt to relate these teachings to others. The value of this book is the broad base of subjects that are presented for the faiths of Christianity; Jewdaism; and Islam.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Recommended but not exactly a pleasure to readBy JackalIf you are interested in a comparison between the three religions; Judaism; Christianity and Islam; then this is the book for you. The style of writing is a bit dull; but it is the best comparison that I am aware of. I with the author would have included figures and charts; but clearly the author is old school and you will have to do with text alone. Unfortunately; you will have to buy volume 1 and 2 since they are cross-referenced to a large extent. The book clearly is a textbook as is priced accordingly.21 of 25 people found the following review helpful. The 3 M.E. Monotheisms ComparedBy William Garrison Jr.For clarification; there are actually 2 different books here with the same title; except for different volume numbers. The title to both books is: "The Monotheists: Jews; Christians; and Muslims in Conflict and Competition." Both books have the same bluish-color cover; so they may seem to be the same in small pictures. To differentiate; you need to see the fine print: "Volume I: The Peoples of God" versus the altogether separate book "Volume II: The Words and Will of God." Vol. I: tells the story of the foundation and formation of the three monotheistic communities; of their visible; historical presence (ISBN:0-691-11460-9; 328 pages). Volume II: is devoted to their inner life; the spirit that animates and regulates them (ISBN:0-691-11461-7; 406 pages). Other books by F.E. Peters are: "Islam: A Guide for Jews and Christians"; "Judaism; Christianity; and Islam"; and "The Children of Abraham."
